Urban75 Feb 2004 photo competition
Theme: spin

Decks

A straightforward interpretation of spin. I took this photo last summer at a friends' leaving party. The shade of green came about from the reflection of a tarpaulin covering the garden just outside the window.

Technical details below.

Santa's guns

Only the Americans would use the spin of Father Christmas to sell guns! I took this years ago during one of many holidays spent in my hometown of New Orleans.

Technical details

I think the most important thing in a camera is feeling comfortable carrying it around a lot. Both of these shots were taken using pocket Olympus 35mm cameras. The top one was with an all automatic Stylus Epic and the one just above with an XA, a wonderful camera from the early '80s. Both have excellent lenses so you're more likely to survive with just natural light (I hate using flashes).

Both were scanned from standard prints using a cheap Umax scanner, which I wouldn't recommend. And I used Photoshop 7 on my early Power Mac G4 to make small corrections: adjusted levels and rubber stamped out blemishes from the scanning.

I've listed these details as its requested in this photo competition, but I strongly believe good picture taking is about looking around a lot and practicing with any camera!
