Patrija and I have known each other for about five years now. For the first few years, we both had other things going on in our lives, and we became good friends, enjoying many good chats over games of backgammon. On many occasions, we found ourselves giving each other support and comfort through some hard times.
Eventually, in early 2000, events unfolded in such a way that we both found ourselves uninvolved in other relationships, and our friendship took a turn to the romantic. One thing led to another, and we decided to meet IRL (In Real Life) in the Spring of 2000. I flew to St. Louis from Nova Scotia - bringing live lobsters, of course - and we spent a wonderful week together. I think that we both knew, at this point, that we were destined to be together, and that it was going to be a lot of fun growing our relationship and watching how things developed.
We both enjoy traveling, so over the next two years or so, I went to St. Louis several times, Patrija came to Nova Scotia, and we spent several wonderful weeks together in Southwest Florida. It was in Ft Myers during our vacation in 2001 that I asked Patrija to be my wife. She agreed and we began our journey through many complications in order to be together. As other Fibsters before us can attest, dealing with getting together as a couple when there are international borders involved is both complicated and time-consuming.
To make life more interesting, at the same time, I was preparing to retire from the job I had held for the past 30 years, with all the life-changes that entails. To make a long story short, all the INS issues were resolved, the work issues handled, and the move organized. At the end of September, I loaded up a big old U-Haul truck and headed halfway across the continent. We were married, on our deck at home, on Sunday October 27th, 2002.
