FIBS logo gallery

From April to June 2002 an internet community project was run to redesign the FIBS website and create a new logo. Below are all the entries received. A huge thanks to everyone who contributed!

FIBS [old] logo

Simon: I've come in a bit late but would like to submit my logo idea for your consideration. Two versions attached - first is 600X60 and a little under 15k. Second is same logo with simpler colours - this is down to 6k. Design concept is to give the impression of a solid stone (1) or metal (2) plate - reflecting Fibs' "elder statesman" status in online bg. No dice or other graphics in keeping with Patti's preference to keep it as simple as possible. Comments and flames welcome - this is just an idea and I'm happy to be laughed at :-)

Alef: I think your logos are too cold and serious, we need some element of fun or at least backgammon. But thx for contributing, I'd like to keep these pages of logos online after the new site has launched, everyone's artwork should be preserved.

Tomawaky: Just to let you know about my idea. Have done very quickly to let you see. But need to be well redrawn : arrow need to be redesign and have no Checker model, so have made a look like. But i still convince it's a good idea ( and better than this rectangle for me ;-) ) don't you ?

Stricken: I really liked Tomawaky's fibsfdr.gif it looks dynamic, warm, inviting and hints at the fun to be had.

cyan-jun2, submitted by cyan and alef

alef: I've just squeezed it into the 60px height restriction, also took off the shadows since I think it just needs to be clear and simple at this size. The smiley face with the dice really emphasize the fun of FIBS, making this our best logo so far. Though pale blue and orange are not my favourite colours.

Fergy: The new graphics are looking good. I prefer the drop shadows on the blue elements, I think it adds a nice touch.

Zorba: I like it, but I really miss the drop shadows! Now 'FIBS' looks a bit too tiny. Making the orange rectangle smaller is an improvement I think. I wonder if it's an idea to use a different color for the dice than the text and smiley? Great to see the new FIBS' logo progress, nice work all!

Fergy: I love the first logo, playing off the ASCII smiley face is very catchy. The two colors work well together, too. My only nit is that the quotation marks around "First Internet... " aren't necessary -- when I first looked at it, I thought they were smudges of some sort. I also think the font for the title (First Internet ...) could be a bit stronger, it is too small and weak for the surrounding colored background. Okay, that's two nits... Great stuff!

Tomawaky: [These are] more fun in my opinion. About [left logo]: I would have keep the arrow rather than the rectangle which is too strict for me with the font, yellow don't please me and I maybe prefer orange, smiley is a great idea, Really good. About [right logo]: maybe too high but like it too, background is good, prefer this kind of color. About both: Why must we Keep "First Internet Back.....". Nostalgic but we want to make a new designed site. So maybe leave it back and go ahead, why not make a fusion with both: Background of the second with some change (more larger maybe) with text and smiley of the first one, and finaly what is missing? The checker. I don't know where to put it, but maybe on top of the i of Fibs!

cyan: in my opinion, the arrow shape (that I [used below]), would be too dynamic with dice and smiley action above. About the checker: would be also an idea for another draft, i'd say.

Text Logo submitted by Fergy

Fergy: I decided to give it a try, "borrowing" the blue dice, and paying homage to the original ASCII art logo -- perhaps I'm a bit sentimental after all...

cyan-may25.jpg (medium JPG 8k)

alef: This is a version of cyan's logo fitting within Fergy's guidelines. What do people think of the colours and fonts used?

Stricken: I'd also put forward a suggestion of blending [tonibarjau's] font with cyan's overall concept. Here's a suggestion for colours, use Olympic ring colours (as they are a known reference to international flags etc), but I realize that there may be other considerations as Fergy mentioned, eg appearance on website backgrounds.

tonibarjau: i like cyan's logos very much, in every case!! They are fresh and direct. And easy to read and to reversion for others functions, i mean, as a little icon for links. What about the dice in 3D? Good job, C!

tonibarjau: the idea is simple: the logo of FIBS (naive, childplay lettering) over a bg background. 1,2, 3 and 4 are banner format, and 5,6 and 7 are logo format. i like 1 and 2, soft and clean, and 3 and 4 for these crossing boards (the idea of many people plays at same time: communication and movement) And the question is: why this corner in the right side of the banner? I like to give the idea that the boards and rules of FIBS are the same than in one table of home or coffe shop, (made in wood or fine stone,... the sound of dice,.... conversations, etc, ....all perfect and nice) but here it is digital. That's why i want to introduce this little part of the board, more technical and cold. Si?

Tomawaky: Great job tonibarjau, my favorite is [2] !

alef: These are very beautiful logos, although I'm not sure I see them working for FIBS. They give a very classy and ultramodern look which I wouldn't say fits in with our server. The font makes me think of a demented child and I find it rather creepy! But perhaps cyan's font is too plain and boring. I wouldn't suggest using the little MacFIBS icons that appear on 1, 4 and 6 -- they're specific to just one interface, and having something that looks like a button on the logo might confuse people.

Fibsters logo, submitted by alef and cyan

fergy:(1) 800 pixels wide is too wide, and 89 pixels tall is still a bit too much as well. I'd like to see logos of approximately 600w x 60h. The logo should not dominate the entire page. (2) Because of the dimensions, and the names in the background, the size of this file is now over 20K. The previous logo, even with animation, was only 13K. I'd like to keep the logo below 10K if possible, although this isn't a strict requirement. (3) The names are an interesting touch, but they add "noise" to the graphic, which contributes significantly to the increased size. Also, the names are meaningful to FIBS members, but won't be to new folks, who may be confused by them. The logo's primary target should be new members to get them interested in FIBS. I do like that the names emphasize the aspects of community, but I'm not sure this is the best place for that. (4) Another potential problem with the names is that this graphic assumes a white background and doesn't lend itself to a reasonable alpha channel mask. This isn't a problem now--I'm a strong believer in black text on white background for web pages--but it could be later on if we want to use the logo in other contexts. For example, we may want to allow people to use the graphic on their web pages to link to FIBS.

cthulhu: Of all the logos presented so far [May 20], I like Cyan's animated logo best. However, I think it would look a lot better without animation. I always find those distracting from the rest of the page. And the "1" die look a little strange with its oversized blob. I like the clear and simple but still pretty logo. I can't say anything about the size problems fergy mentions since I sit by a large screen watching it, so for me it seems like a good size. Otherwise I agree with him.

fergy: I like cyan's new artwork, although I think it is too large. I would prefer to have a wide, short logo that can be used as a simple banner across the top (this would also rule out Stricken's narrow, tall design). This will work better since our pages are mostly text without tables or other layout structure.

Zorba: I like both cyan's and alef's logo, even if they follow a completely different approach. I agree very much that a logo should be wide, and not tall; this looks much prettier in the lay-out. I think the animation is "too much", especially for a logo.

socksey: I love cyan's logo. Great! :))

Tomawaky: I really like cyan's logo. I've tried to make out another kind, just for pleasure [Tomawaky's design]. About the animated dice. For a logo I think It's better to choose 2 numbers, but I don't know which ones?

Purple diamond, submitted by Tomawaky

Tomawaky: I really like cyan's logo. I've tried to make out another kind, just for pleasure. My starting point was the Fibs T-Shirt which was pink over black if I Remember well ;-). So just have a look but I think cyan'one is more appropriate. (and it remembers me the logo I've created for the FibsLeaGammon) About the color. Depending on the general website color it would be necessary to change or make the website with logo's color.

Colorful yet simple, submitted by Stricken

Stricken: I'm no artist, and it took just a few mins to knock these up with the basic bitmap tools. If you think they are useful, you might want to touch them up or something to make them more symmetrical etc. the colors I chose to represent a few nations national colors - obviously the red and blue feature in many Western flags, and the green is common to a number of other nations flags (e.g. Asian, and Islamic etc). The first one is the main concept, the second one I added a crude smiley face to, after noting somebody's suggestion that a design should reflect the fun element of the game. It might even be possible to add the full words horizontally in black (First, Internet, Backgammon, Server).

Welcom to FABS, First Anarchist Backgammon Server

FABS, submitted by ANARKIST

georgehayduke: I like this idea... Fibs is an anarchist site... we come together with the only rule that racists and fascists aren't welcome. This in the midst of a massive advertising medium where we have absolutely no corporate involvement/ads/etc. And I do think we should honor this part of Fibs, but maybe not by putting a graphical anarchist symbol in the logo... that just isn't necessary... it's redundant. Perhaps to honor our anarchist roots, we could update the Message of the Day for Fibs 10th birthday?... perhaps with details of exactly who is destroying our oceans and why and even what we could do about it.
